Explain the following methods of paint application:
(a)        brushing;                    
(b)        spraying;
(c)        rolling;
(d)       flow coating;
(e)        dipping.

Observation

Few of the candidates answered the question correctly, while others answered out of context. The candidates performance was fair.  The candidates were expected to provide the following answers to the question:

(a)        Brushing
A method of paint application to a surface by using brush which enables the painter to apply paint into crevices or corners on both small and large surfaces. A suitable method which reduces wastage of paint but seldomly leaves brush marks on painted surface.

(b)        Spraying
A method of applying paint using a spray gun and compressed air which atomizes the paint liquid into a fine particles to a surface faster than brushing and rolling . Suitable for both large and small surfaces.

(c)        Rolling
A process of applying paint with a roller, it is faster than brushing and give a thicker coating than brushing. A suitable method for coating both smooth rough and textured surfaces.

(d)       Flow coating
A method of automated industrial liquid coating using numerous jet nozzles to apply paint onto various shaped objects as the conveyor moves on a track.
(e)        Dipping
A method of paint application for mass production which involves the immersing of objects ranging from motor car parts to quite small objects in a tank of paint while allowing the excess paint to drain off when drying.
