Observation

Few of the candidates answered the question fairly, while others answered the question wrongly. The candidates performance was fair.  The candidates were expected to provide the following answers to the question:

1. • Mobile scaffold;
   • Independent scaffold;
   • Putlog/dependent scaffold;
   • Birdcage scaffold;
   • Slung scaffold;
   • Truss-out/out rigger/cantilever/Jip Scaffold;
   • Suspended/Travelling cradle;
   • System/Unit scaffold;
   • Bosun chair scaffold;
   • Trestle scaffold.

• Standards must be placed on base plates;
• standards must be vertical or slightly inclined towards the building;
• sole must not be used on soft, uneven and fragile grounds;
• it is essential that tube joints in standards and ledgers are staggered and not kept in line;
• boards must be evenly supported;
• working platforms must have guard rails and toe boards;
• safe means of access must be provided throughout when using scaffolds;
• only wire ropes, chairs or tubes must be used for suspension;
• all ropes or chains must be taunt;
• the whole platform must be close-boarded;
• sand bags, water tanks or loose scrap iron must not be used for counter balances;
• all pole framework should be made with wire lashing;
• purpose made stop-ends must be used on track ends not wire bonds;
• suspension wires must have no twists or kinks which could foul winch;
• suspension rope must be free from damage;
• the cradle must be entered from a safe point of access not by climbing up or down the ropes;
• when not in use, cradles should be hauled up out of reach of unauthorised people;
• cradles must be inspected once a week and inspection recorded in scaffold register;
• operative must use safety belt;
• operative must wear protective helmet.
