Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor. In part (a) candidates could not state factors that should be considered when planning the diet of an athlete.
In part (b )(i) many candidates wrote wrong answers such as energy giving food for post competition food, in (b )(ii) candidates could not correctly give reason for the kind of food recommended for post completion. In (c) candidates correctly named classes of energy-giving foods.

The expected answers were as follows:
10(a) Factors in Planning an athlete's diet
- Daily food requirement based on individual athlete's energy need
- Age of athlete
- Season/clime
- Food requirement before, during and after competition
- Individual health status/condition
- Muscle glycogen loading
- Type of activity involved
- Timing/duration/frequency of the activity
- Culture/religion
- Sex/gender

(b )(i) Post competition Food
- More protein
(ii) Reason
- To build and repair worn-out tissues

( c)         Classes of energy-giving foods
- Carbohydrates/glucose
- Fat and oil/lipids
- Protein/amino acids.
