(b) What is muscle tone? [2 marks]
(c) State two effects of exercise one each of the following
                   (i)           muscle;
                   (ii)         the heart. [4 marks]

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was fair. In part (a) some candidates wrote the advantages of a knock-out completion. In part (b) few of the candidates lost mark because of their inability to define muscle tone fully, they wrote contraction of muscle for muscle tone.
In part (c) few candidates got the answer correctly which majority of the candidates missed the track.

The expected answers were as follows:

  (a)         Disadvantages ofa knock-out competition
- It does not allow for maximum participation
- It does not make provision for mistakes to be corrected
- Best team can be eliminated at the early state of the competition
- the winner might not be the best
- it may not allow teams to determine their abilities
(b)          Muscle tone

The state of continual partial contraction of the muscle

(c)           Effects of exercise on
                (i)           Muscle
- Increase muscle size
- develops muscle strength
- enables muscle to have greater endurance
- helps muscle to develop more myoglobins
- helps to improve muscle tone
                (ii)          The heart
- increases the heart size
- reduces heart beat per minute
- increase heart efficiency
- increases heart stroke volume/cardiac output/amount of blood pumped per minutes
- increase heart endurance
- to develop physical fitness in the individual/named components
- to develop efficient neuro-muscular coordination
- to develop safety skills in the individual
   (b)       Explaining the following:
               (i)           National sports championship
National sports championship is competitions organized at the national level and the
participation is open to members of that country.
              (ii)          Institutional sports championship
Institutional sports championship is competitions mainly organized for members of
particular levels of educational institution.
