Question 2

(a) State six duties of a basketball referee. [6 marks]

 

(b) State four instances in which a player is not off-side in a football game.

                        

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor.
 In part (a) candidates confuse basketball referee with football referee, they wrote wrong as  duties of a basketball referee such as to declare final whistle, when time was gone, to monitor the steps of players, to coordinate the game to be well played. 

 

In part (b) many candidates could not correctly state instances in which a player is not off-side in football game, they wrote wrong answer is such as when a player maintains his position, when the ball is passed to the player in front of defender, a penalty is not counted offside when taken. 


The expected answers are as follows:

2 (a)                 DUTIES OF A BASKETBALL REFEREE

  •       - putting the ball into play through ‘ jump ball’           
  •       - stopping the play when there is an infringement
  •       - approves time-out
  •      - permits substitute onto the court
  •       - hands over the ball to a player for a throw
  • - sees to the inspection/approval of facilities and equipment                                                 
  •   -           decides whether a point/basket shall count or not
  • making decisions on any point not covered by the rules/takes final decision                        -           calling foul and administering free throws
  • examining the score sheets

                                                             

(b)    INSTANCES IN WHICH A PLAYER IS NOT OFFSIDE IN THE GAME OF FOOTBALL
When a player

  •    - is in his own half of the field of play
  •    - receives the ball directly from a goal kick
  •    - receives the ball directly from a throw-in
  •    - receives the ball directly from a corner-kick
  •    - receives drop ball by the referee
  •    - when the ball was last played by an opponent
  •    - when there are one or more of his/her
   - opponents nearer to their own goal line than he is
