Question 4

Fig. 2 shows the sketch plan of a bungalow.  Study the given specifications and use them to answer the questions that follow.

SPECIFICATION

All dimensions are given in millimetres.

FOUNDATION:  225 x 675 concrete strip on 15 blinding at a depth of 1000 below the ground level.

FLOOR:            150 hardcore; 150 concrete slab; 25 terrazzo floor finish.

WALLS:               All walls 225 with 13 mortar rendering on both sides.

LINTEL:               225 X 225 reinforced concrete.

BEAM:                 900 x 225 reinforced concrete2300 above the verandah floor.

COLUMN:           225 X 225 square reinforced concrete.

DOORS:              D -  Flush, 2100 x 900 x 38 in 150 x 150 timber frame.
D1-Glazed aluminium sliding 2100 x 1800 x 35
D2 -  Iron roller shutter.

WINDOWS:         W -700 x 700 top hung aluminium casement.
W -1000 x 1200 glazed aluminium sliding.
ROOF:                 150 reinforced concrete roof with 22 bituminous felt as roof finish.

VERANDAH:      Open without balustrades, at 450 above the ground level and 300 above the general floor level.  Riser is 150 and tread is 200.

(a)     Draw, to a scale of 1:100 the:

(i)plan;

(ii)elevation in the direction of arrow K.

(b)     Draw to a scale of 1:50, the sectional view on P–P.

(Assume suitable dimension where necessary)

Observation

Candidates were asked to draw the floor plan, elevation in the direction of arrow K and sectional view on plane P-P.
Most of the candidates attempted this question and their performance was okay.  However, some of the candidates could not draw the plan with the 450 inclination as given.  Use of convention and sectioning was poorly done.

Candidates were expected to do the following:

  1. draw to correct scale (1:100)(12720 x 12700 +10mm);
  2. draw the walls at angle 45o;
  3. draw the walls;
  4. draw 13 windows;
  5. draw 12 doors and the garage door;
  6. draw 2 beams;
  7. draw 1  column;
  8. draw the cutting plane P – P;
  9. draw the ramp;
  10. For identify11 apartments;
  11. For write floor plan;
  12. draw neatly.

The solution is shown below:

FRONT ELEVATION

  1. draw to correct scale 1:100;
  2. draw the ground line (G.L.);
  3. draw the floor level;
  4. draw 6 walls;
  5. draw the column;
  6. draw 2 beams;
  7. draw 4 double and 1 single windows with conventions;
  8. draw the aluminium sliding door with convention;
  9. draw the garage roller shutter door;
  10. draw the concrete roof;
  11. draw the eaves projetion;
  12. write front elevation;
  13. draw neatly.

The solution is shown below:

SECTION  P - P

  1. draw to correct scale 1:50;
  2. draw the ground line;
  3. draw the 3 foundation footings and blindings 1000 below G.L.;
  4. draw the earth filling;
  5. draw the hardcore;
  6. draw concrete slab;
  7. draw the floor finish;
  8. draw 3 walls in section;
  9. section the 3 walls;
  10. draw 2 walls in elevation;
  11. draw 1 ramp;
  12. draw 2 lintels;
  13. draw 2 windows in section;
  14. draw 2 doors  in elevation;
  15. draw the iron roller shutter in elevation;
  16. draw the reinforced concrete roof with convention;
  17. draw eaves projection;
  18. draw the roof finish with 22 bituminous felt;
  19. showany five labels;
  20. write section P – P;
  21. draw neatly.
  22. The solution is shown below:
