Question 1

(a)        State three safety precautions to be observed in the use of oxy-acetylene equipment.
(b)    (i)   What is a gangway?                                                                                       
                        (ii)        State two reasons for creating gangways in a workshop.
(c)        Sketch each of the following welding symbols:
                        (i)         fillet;
                        (ii)        edge weld;
                        (iii)       single ‘v’ butt.

Observation

Most of the candidates who attempted this question responded correctly. However, some candidates stated the general workshop safety precautions instead of precautions associated with oxy-acetylene. Also, many candidates could not state reasons for creating gangways (b) (ii). The required responses to these parts of the question are given below.
1 (a)     Safety precautions to be observed in the use of oxy-acetylene equipment.

  • Do not leave a lighted torch unattended to.
  • Test gas leakages with soapy water and not with naked flame.
  • Do not roll cylinders on the floor, use trolley.
  • Do not weld near inflammable materials.
  • Do not allow oil or grease to have contact with cylinder connections.

(b) (ii)  -           Gang ways are created so that workers can move without accident;
-           It enables materials to be carried in and out without hindrance;
-           It also allows people to run for safety in case of emergency without
hindrance;
-           Machines and equipment too can be moved conveniently.
