Section B
DESIGN AND DRAWING
A bookcase is to be designed to the following specifications:
height - 350 mm;
width - 360 mm;
depth - 210 mm.
The bookcase is made from 20 mm solid wood.
It has one shelf and one panel glazed door.
(1) Make two Preliminary freehand pictorial sketches each for a different design of the bookcase.
(2) Select one of the sketches in questions 1 and indicate the selected sketch with a tick (√). To a scale of 1:2, draw in the First Angle Orthographic projection the following:
(A)front elevation;
(B)plan with top removed.
Observation
Candidates were expected to do the following:
- make two different preliminary freehand sketches of a bookcase
- select one with a tick
- draw the front elevation
- draw the plan with to removed
- draw to specification
- dimension properly
- name the views.
Most of the candidates performed poorly in this section. They seem not to understand the concepts of:
- bookcase
- glazed door
- panel door
- shelf.
The concepts were missing in their sketches and some used straight edge instead of sketching with freehand.
The solution is stated below:
I Preliminary Freehand Pictorial Sketches
- draw for resemblance;
- draw completely;
- draw to proportion ;
- draw overall dimension properly;
- draw good line quality.
II (A) Front Elevation (FE)
- indicate the sketch selected
- draw carcase members (2 stile, top, bottom ,shelf in hidden detail)
- draw door members (2 stile and 2 rails)
- draw door details (one glazed panel, 2 hinges, lock, handle)
- Indicate the joints (at least 2)
- draw to scale
- dimension properly
- show line quality
- name the view
(A) Plan With Top Removed
- position the first angle in the appropriate plane
- project from front elevation
- show carcase members (2 sides and back cover)
- draw door members (rails and stile)
- draw door details (top rail, hinges, handle)
- show shelf
- indicate joints ( at least 2)
- draw to scale
- dimension properly
- show line quality
- name the view
