Candidates were expected to do the following:

- list the two operations required for keeping the cutting edge of a tools keen;
- state one reason why lubricant is used on an oil stone when sharpening a tool.
Candidates performed well in this question but some of them could not state the safety precautions when using a woodworking machine the where stating general workshop safety.

(A) General safety precautions on the use of woodworking machines
- never get distracted while operating a machine
- never leave a machine until it has stopped running
- always isolate the machine and clean it after use
- never make any adjustment to machine while it is running
- allow machine to reach maximum speed before feeding
- make adequate use of guards and safety devices
- wear goggles or eye shield when using machines which produce dust, chips or shavings
- no running or fooling around
- only the machine operator should operate the switches and controls of a machine
- examine the materials to be worked upon before feeding the machine
(B) The operations required to keep the cutting edge of a tool keen
- grinding
- sharpening/honing
- lapping
- polishing
(C) Reason why a lubricant is used on an oilstone when sharpening a tool
- to aid the movement of the tool over the stone
- to reduce friction
- to float away the particles of steel which are rubbed from the tool
- to reduce the clogging of the oil stone
