Question 1a required candidates to state one cause of the following problems encountered during hand planning::

 

  1. Shavings clogging the plane mouth
  2. Plane cutter not cutting wood.

 

The expected response is:

  1. Shavings clogging the plane mouth:
    • • back iron not bedding tightly on the cutter
    • • shavings jammed between cap iron and cutter face;
    • • thick tearing shaving.
    • • back iron set too far from cutting edge of cutter
    • • narrow mouth opening
  2. Plane cutter not cutting wood:
    • • cutter not projecting below plain sole
    • • dull cutter;
    • • cap iron not fixed tightly to cutter;
    • • clogging of the plane mouth
    • • wrong sharpening angle of cutter
    • • no gap between cap iron and cutting edge of cutter


 

Question 1b required candidates to make a pictorial sketch of a bevel-edge chisel.
The expected answer is:


 

Question 1c requested candidate to list two factors of production, the expected response is:

  • land
  • labour
  • capital
  • entrepreneur/enterprise

 

Comments on Question 1&2

Many of the candidates could not identify a beveled edge chisel.

Many candidates stated factors for citing a business instead of factors of production.
