Observation

 

 

Question 3a required candidates to list two tools used for extracting nails. The required response is:

 

  • Crow- bar
  • pincers;
  • pliers;
  • claw hammer;
  • nail puller (cat’s paw);
  • Power nail puller


 

Question 3(b) required candidates to state two safety precautions to be taken when turning between centres on the lathe. The expected response is:

  • wear safety goggles;
  • wear apron \overall;
  • make sure the live centre grips the stock firmly;
  • rotate the stock by hand to ensure the stock is not rubbing on the two rest;
  • hold tools with both handle;
  • make sure tools are resting against the tools rest;
  • use the appropriate speed for the work;
  • do not adjust any part of the machine while it is running;
  • use the correct tool for the specific operation;
  • stop the machine if any unusual noise is heard.
 

Question 3c required candidates to state two reasons for lubricating an oilstone during honing. The required response is:

  • to reduce friction between the stone and the cutter;
  • to carry away the particles produced during honing;
  • to effectively produce a keen edge on the metal blade;
  • to reduce excessive heat, tear and wear.
  • To reduce glazing of the stone;
  • To reduce clogging on the stone;

 

Comments on Question 3

Many candidates could not list common tools used to pull out nails from wood.

Many candidates were stating general safety instead of that pertaining to the turning lathe.

Most candidates could state reasons for lubricating an oilstone during honing.
