Question 1

 

(1) Make the test piece shown below, using the timber which has been

planed to the following sizes.  (all dimensions are in millimeters):

one piece210 x 120 x 5 plywood;
two pieces 210 x 40 x 30;
two pieces160 x 40 x 30;
2 No. 4 x 12 mm countersunk head woodscrews.

(2)You may use any of the ordinary hand tools but the use of glue, glass-paper, files, rasps and scrapers are not allowed.

(3)Any dimension which is omitted from the drawing is left to your own discretion.

(4)If you make any mistake, work as near to the drawing as possible. 

Additional materials will not be supplied.

(5)Print your name and index number clearly on each piece of wood and assemble your work before handing it over to the Supervisor.

 

Observation

 

This is a practical question which requires the candidates to construct an incomplete door model.

The assessment of the incomplete door model is divided into five areas and marks were awarded.

Candidates’ performance in each stage is stated as follows:

(1)     Through haunched mortise and tenon – Most of the candidates could not construct the haunch.

(2)     Through dovetail joint – Most candidates produced the tails but were unable to make fitting sockets.

(3)     Rebates – Most of the candidates could not cut the rebates.

(4)     Fitting and fixing the back – Most Candidates were unable to do this properly.

(5)Finishing – Majority of the candidates performed poorly.
