(a) State one duty of each of the following personnel on a construction site:
- clerk of works;
- general foreman.
(b) Use a sketch to illustrate a suitable profile for setting out a square pillar.
(c) Explain the use of each of the following earth moving equipment:
- bulldozer;
- scraper;
- grader.
Observation
A good number of candidates were able to:
- illustrate with sketches a suitable profile for setting out a square pillar;
- explain correctly the use of the earth moving equipments.
However, many of them failed to:
- state the duty of clerk of works and general foreman on a construction site.
The expected response to question 2 is as given below:
2 (a) One duty of each of the following personnel on a construction site:
(i) Clerk of works is responsible for:
(1) checking stock of materials tools and equipment;
(2) checking spot levels and (accuracy) of setting out;
(3) testing of materials to ensure that they comply with standards approved by the architect;
(4) report progress of work to the architect;
(5) labour attendance records;
(6) checking quality of materials and workmanship comply with standards.
(ii) General Foreman:
(1) he is responsible for the orderly progress of the site work;
(2) he supervises the tradesmen under him;
(3) he passes on information from the contractor to the workmen.

(c) (i) Bulldozer:
1. It is used for clearing trees, shrubs and weeds.
2 It is used for shallow excavations up to 300mm deep.
3. It is used for pushing excavated earth.
(ii) Scraper:
1. Is used for cutting and removing excavated soil.
2. It is used for site surface stripping and haulage of the loose earth to a disposal point.
(iii) Grader:
1. It is used to finish the upper surface of a large area.
2. It is used also as a follow up operation to a bulldozer or scrapper.
