Question 3
(1 KINGS 3:3-15)
- Highlight Solomon’s dream at Gibeon.
- Identify four ways Solomon used his wisdom positively.
- State four skills one needs in order to take wise decisions.
Observation
This question was well understood and interpreted by majority of the candidates who attempted it. Candidates were able to outline how Solomon asked for wisdom and understanding rather than asking for himself long life, riches and the life of his enemies when God asked him to request for what he desired in a dream at Gibeon. God was pleased with his request. They were also able to outline the promises God made to Solomon, promising him riches and honour and also to lengthen his days on the condition that Solomon obeyed God’s commands like his father David did.
In the B Part, the candidates concentrated their efforts on the judgment between the two harlots and how Solomon ruled over the case. They also discussed about the building and dedication of the temple. Other points candidates were expected to answer included;
- He uttered several proverbs.
- He wrote one thousand and five songs.
- He spoke of trees from the Cedar in Lebanon to the hyssop.
- He spoke of beasts, birds and reptiles.
- He used his wisdom to establish good relations with his neighbours/ Trade alliances.
- He re-instituted the Jewish festivals that were discarded.
- He divided the country into 12 districts for administrative and economic reasons.
The part C which required candidates to point out skills needed to make wise decisions seemed to be less difficult for the candidates as most of them used their initiative and everyday life experiences. However, majority of them went off point. Candidates were expected to list out some of the following:
- Negotiation skills.
- Listening skills.
- Conflict resolution skills.
- Observation of attitudes and behaviour of suspects.
- Administrative skills.
- Ability to consult widely.
