Outline five differences between the French policies of association and assimilation.

Observation


This question was unpopular among the candidates. The candidates that attempted it performed below average. They failed to develop their points and scored low marks. Nevertheless, the candidates were expected to explain the following points in order to earn good marks:
           

  1. Assimilation imposed French culture on Africans while Association recognized African culture.
  2. Assimilation relegated the position of the chiefs to the background while Association recognized the status of the chiefs.
  3. Assimilation created one central administration based in Dakar for the federation of French West Africa Association allowed for a gradual devolution of powers and eventual independence.
  4. Assimilation encouraged obnoxious policies of forced labour and indigenat while Association promoted some degree of freedom.
  5. Assimilation suppressed the formation of political associations/parties and other social activities while Association promoted them.
  6. Assimilation discriminated against Africans by categorizing them into subjects and citizens whereas Association removed the distinctions and recognized all Africans as citizens.
  7. Assimilation disallowed the creation of local legislative assemblies while Association encouraged the establishment of territorial assemblies.
  8. Assimilation limited franchise to only male adults while Association expanded it.
  9. Assimilation restricted Western education to the citizens while Association extended it to all Africans.
  10. Assimilation granted full citizenship to only Africans, who were able to read, write and speak the French language fluently while Association granted it to all Africans.
  11. Assimilation operated direct rule while Association operated indirect rule.
