Explain five measures that could be to prevent military rule in Nigeria.

This question was popular and was attempted by many of the candidates. The ones who attempted it did perform well. The candidates were expected to provide the following answers in order to score good marks.
- Compliance with the provisions of the constitution by the ruling party.
- Legislation to severely punish offenders even after leaving office.
- Periodic, free and fair elections.
- Willingness of political leaders to relinquish power.
- Independent, courageous and unbiased judiciary.
- Effective fight against bribery and corruption.
- Financial mismanagement/misappropriation should be discouraged and offenders punished.
- Civilians should reject political appointment from the military.
- Condition of service for soldiers should be attractive to keep them in the barracks.
- Adequate security/intelligence to make planning of coups difficult.
- Opulent/extravagant life style of political office holders and public officials should be discouraged.
- Ethnicity/regionalism/sectarianism should be discouraged.
