Explain five factors that led to the success of Indirect Rule in Northern Nigeria.

This was a popular question. The performance of the candidates who answered it was above average. The candidates were expected to provide the following answers to the question.
- The existence of a well-established and centralized system of traditional administration.
- Autocratic nature of the Emir/He commanded respect of his people.
- The system did not interfere with the traditional authority of the Emirs.
- The British colonial authorities made use of the traditional administrative structure.
- The British colonial authorities did not interfere with the Islamic religion of the North.
- Existence of well-organized system of taxation.
- There was little opposition to indirect rule from the people.
- The system was economical for the British government.
- There was the existence of good judicial system which assisted in the administration of justice.
- Existence of efficient and effective military set up which provided security.
- The culture of the total obedience/Submission to traditional authority in that part of the country.
