Question 3
The diagram below illustrates part of the human skeleton. Study it carefully and answer questions 3(a),(b) and (c).
(a) (i) Name the parts labelled I,II,III,IV,V and VI. [3 marks]
(ii) Identify the part of the human skeleton illustrated [1 mark ]
(b) (i) Mention the bone in humans that forms a joint with the
part labelled III. [1 mark]
(ii) State one function of the structure represented by the
diagram in humans. [1 mark]
(c) (i) Name the vertebra that joins the part labelled I [1 mark]
(ii) State the number of bones that form the vertebra in
Observation
This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor. In part (a)(i) candidates could not correctly name the parts labelled I,II,III,IV,V and VI and in (ii) candidates also could not identify the part of the human skeleton illustrated, only few candidates correctly got the answer. In part (b)(i) candidates could not correctly mention the bone in humans that forms a joint with the part labelled III and in (ii) candidates also could not state one function of the structure represented by the diagram in humans. In part (c)(i) candidates could not also correctly name the vertebra that joins the part labelled I and in (II) candidates could not also state the number of bones form the vertebra in (c)(i).
The expected answers are as follow:
3(a)(i) PARTS LABELLED
I - sacrum
II - ilium
III - acetabulum
IV - coccyx
V - ischium
VI - public symphysis/coccyx
(ii) IDENTIFICATION OF THE HUMAN SKELETON
- pelvic girdle/hip bone
(b)(i) BONE IN HUMAN THAT FORM A JOINT WITH THE PART LABELLED III
- femur/thigh bone
(ii) FUNCTION OF THE STRUCTURE REPRESENTED BY THE DIAGRAM IN
HUMANS
- receive the weight of the upper body/support
- protects the reproductive organ
- forms the hip joint to facilitate movement
- forms attachment for muscles.
(c)(i) VERTEBRA THAT JOINS THE PART LABELLED I
- lumbar
(ii) NUMBER OF BONES THAT FORMED VERTEBRA IN (C) (I) ABOVE
