Health Education Paper 3 WASSCE (PC), 2016

Question 5

(a)(i)   Define growth in humans.  [2 marks]
(ii)    State two factors that affect human growth    [2 marks]

(b)   State two functions each of the following structures found in animals cells::
(i)   mitochondrion;

(ii)    nucleus;

(iii)     cytoplasm [ 6 marks ]

Observation

 This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor.  In part (a)(i) majority of the candidates defined growth in humans and in (a)(ii) candidates also stated factors that affect human growth.  In part (b)(i),(ii) and (iii) candidates could not correctly state function each of the structures found in animal cells i.e mitochondrion, nucleus and cytoplasm

The expected answers are as follows:

5 (a)(i)     GROWTH

  • Growth is an irreversible increase in size, weight, shape and height/physical change and
  • may result in changes in functions in the human body

(ii)       FACTORS THAT AFFECT HUMAN GROWTH
            -    nutrition/diet/malnutrition
-    disease/health status
-    environment
-    heredity

b.(i)     FUNCTIONS OF MITOCHONDRION
-    site for the production of energy/ATP/ power house of the cell
-    involves in cellular/tissue /aerobic respiration

(ii)     FUNCTIONS OF NUCLEUS
-      controls chemical reactions which takes place in the cytoplasm
-      controls cell division
-      contains body’s genetic materials/DNA
-      controls metabolic/life activities of the cell.

(iii)      FUNCTIONS OF CYTOPLASM

  • holds all the cellular organelles
  •  chemical reactions of the cell occur in the cytoplasm
  • stores food/reserves materials
  • production of substances to be used outside the cell
