(b) Outline any four functions of the Council of Elders in pre-colonial Igboland. |

This was an unpopular question. The candidates were able to identify the oracles but could not fully explain the responsibilities of the council of elders which included the administrative, judicial, and religious, etc. To score more marks, they were expected to give the following answers:
- (i) Ibinu Kpabi/Long Juju;
- Amadioha,
- Agbala,
- Igwekala,
- Onyiliora,
(i) They assigned responsibilities to the Age groups.
- (ii) The council discussed and made important decisions that
were related to the administration and general welfare of the
people and community.
- (iii) The council performed judicial functions, while in some
Communities, they acted as the final court of appeal.
- (iv) Members performed religious and traditional ritual functions
on behalf of their wards.
- (v) They could declare war in consultation with members of the
Village Assemblies whenever their communities were threatened by external aggression . |
