This question was fairly popular but mere listing of points without explanation made candidates score low marks. They were expected to identify the following points:
(i) Each emirate which chose its emir had to seek approval from Sokoto.
(ii) The Emir’s chief ministers must be confirmed by Sokoto before they were to become effective.
(iii) The emirates were regularly toured by officials from Sokoto.
(iv) Correspondences from Sokoto were often passed to the emirates to enable them to follow the administrative policies of Sokoto and apply them in the emirates.
(v) Tributes in the form of gifts, percentages of war booty, etc had to be remitted to the caliph |
