Outline any five ways by which the Missionaries spread Christianity in Nigeria.
Observation
This was a popular question; many candidates understood its demand. In spite of recognizing and identifying relevant points, they produced disjointed answers; though a few of them demonstrated originality in the way they discussed the points. Candidates were expected to mention the following points in order to get good marks.
- The Christian missionaries preached against some inhuman practices and thus encouraged some people to embrace Christianity.
- They established schools.
- The Bible was translated into different Nigerian languages.
- They encouraged the promotion of legitimate trade to replace slave trade.
- Introduction of new crops and farming techniques.
- Hospitals and medical centres were established to reduce or eradicate diseases.
- They introduced vocational institutions.
- Training of Nigerian clergymen.
- They built churches.
- Establishment of orphanages.
- Experimental farm were set up to promote agriculture.
- Evangelism through preaching and distribution of Bibles and Christian tracks.
- Focusing on the conversion of rulers as a means of reaching their subjects.
