Outline any five criticisms levelled against the military administration between 1975 and 1979. |
This question was a very popular and straightforward one. It was attempted by many candidates who understood its requirements. Their performance was generally above average and it could have been more if not because they merely listed their points without explanation. Some discussed the criticisms of military administration in Nigeria generally and went beyond the required period of 1975-1979. The following points were expected of the candidates:
(i) The promise made by the military leaders to eradicate corruption and provide social justice was only partially fulfilled. In many instances, the military administrators still awarded contracts to those who had contact in government.
(ii) Inflation reached unprecedented heights during the military regime. Contracts awarded were highly inflated.
(iii) The Universal Primary Education Policy was poorly managed, e.g. some of the buildings were poorly constructed. Textbooks were inadequately supplied and there was shortage of staff, irregular payment of staff salaries and inadequate supply of instructional materials.
(v) The industrialization programme was based on import substitution strategy and industrial were consumer oriented.
(vi) In the field of agriculture, billions of naira was sunk into the establishment of the River and Lake Basins Development Authority all over the country but were not properly managed and monitored.
