(a) Identify any three emirates that were under the influence of Sokoto
Caliphate.
(b) Highlight the features of the political organization of the Sokoto
Caliphate. |
This was a popular question and most candidates who attempted it performed very well. However, a few candidates derailed by citing the sequence and chronology of Usman dan Fodio’s jihad. Some candidates could not explain fully the features of the political organization of the Sokoto Caliphate. Skimpy answers were given thereby resulting in low scores. The candidates were expected to give the following answers:
(a) (i) Bauchi,
(ii) kano,
(iii) Katagun,
(iv) Katsina,
(v) Zaria, etc.
(b) (i) Sokoto was the headquarters of the caliphate;
(ii) The Caliphate was headed by the Sultan who exercised political, religious and judicial authority over the whole Caliphate;
(iii) The Caliphate was divided into emirates, each under an emir who must be loyal to the Caliph;
(iv) The Emirates were supposed to be governed along Islamic principles, etc |
