This was a very unpopular question as it was attempted by very few
candidates. Most candidates who answered it did not actually
understand its demands. They only discussed Borno history and
emphasized the role of El-Kanemi. They were expected
(i) Borno traded with North Africa through what was known as the
trans-saharan trade and got its foreign exchange earning from it:
(ii) Islam which became the dominant religion in Borno came through the trade;
(iii) Borno major cities such as Ngazargamu, Kukawa and Dikwa developed along the trade routes;
(iv) Borno markets became the places of exchange for Central African and North African and European goods;
(v) A class of rich long distance traders emerged in Borno, etc.
