This was a fairly popular question and most candidates that attempted it did well in the
part (a) of the questions as they were able to list the objects. However, the part (b) of the question seemed to be challenging to the candidates as some of them failed to explain convincingly, ways in which Igbo-Ukwu is important as a centre of ancient civilization. In order to be able to score good marks in this question, candidates were expected to list any three of these objects i.e. Water pot, Bronze bowls, Bells, Alter stand etc. in part (a), while they were expected to explain any four, but not limited to the following, points in part (b):
(i) The antiquity of the objects discovered is a proof of the level of civilization of the people;
(ii) it also shows that the people were well organized e.g. the burial chamber
must have been that of a traditional ruler;
(iii) it is a confirmation of the high artistic achievements of Igbo-Ukwu craftsmen;
(iv) the technique used (low wax method) which they probably learned from North
Africa shows early contact with the outside world, etc. |
