This was not a popular question and very few candidates attempted it. It demanded the candidates to explore the causes of the war between Ibadan and Ijaye in 1860. However, candidates failed to concentrate on Ibadan-Ijaye and discussed the causes of war in Yorubaland generally. Nevertheless, a few candidates answered the question brilliantly. Such candidates were able to explain the following points convincingly:
(i) The desire by Oluyole of Ibadan to use his military power to displace Alaafin was opposed by Kurunmi of Ijaye because Oluyole was not qualified for the post;
(ii) the attempt by Ogunmola to redeem his image after he was captured by Kurunmi in the Batedo war. As a high ranking Ibadan official, he considered his capture as humiliation which must be corrected at all cost;
(iii) there was clash of interests and personalities among the prominent leaders in New Oyo which led to war. For example, Ogunmola had strained relationship with Kunrunmi;
(iv) the hatred of Adelu toward Kurunmi for opposing his ambition to become Alaafin of Oyo. This made his supporters anxious to deal with Kurunmi, etc.
