Identify any five factors that strengthened Biafra during the Nigerian Civil War.
Observation
This question was popular and was attempted by most of the candidates. The few ones who attempted it did perform well; only a few failed to provide correct answers to the question. The candidates were expected to provide the following answers in order to score good marks.
(i) Mass support was received from Igbo indigenes at home and abroad.
(ii) Biafra succeeded in accumulating large quantity of military equipment.
(iii) Foreign arm dealers supplied arms and ammunition to Biafra.
(iv) Total war did not immediately take off and this made it possible for Biafra to adequately prepare for the war.
(v) International support was received by Biafra.
(vi) The strength of the army was increased through conscription of able-bodied men and children.
(vii) Biafra had at its disposal large sum of money to finance the war.
(viii) Biafra employed mercenaries to fight on its behalf.
(ix) All routes leading to Biafra were blocked and bombs planted, bridges were cut off to avoid incursion of Nigerian troops.
(x) The defected Nigerian soldiers fought for Biafra.
(xi) The Biafran soldiers were sufficiently familiar with the terrain and received local support.
(xii) Biafra employed effective propaganda machine.
(xiii) The quest for liberation from the federal administration.
