Observation
This question required the candidates to state aims of consumer education. Majority of the candidates that attempt this question performed well, they were able to state the aims of consumer education as it:
- enlightens the public (consumers) about their rights and privileges.
- educates the public about various:
- laws that govern manufacture of goods.
- standard and sanitary conditions of commodities.
- gives awareness about activities of various agencies concerning the safety of food.
- enables the consumer to know how and where to buy the goods and services needed.
- enlightens the consumers on how to obtain the best value for money.
- safeguards consumers from dangerous and inferior goods and services.
- protects consumers from unfair selling practices.
In 6(b) was widely attempted by many candidates and the performed excellently and they were
able to enumerate the point to consider when planning to buy in bulk as:
- Available storage facilities
- a proper storage is needed to preserve the food.
- Food in season – foods are fresh and cheaper when in season.
- Size of the family – size of the family will affect what to buy.
- Amount of money available – if one food item is bought in bulk there must be enough money to buy others.
- Quality of food to be purchased – good quality food will keep well.
- The frequency of consumption of the food involved – foods kept too long may start losing taste.
- Nature of food stuff (perishable or non–perishable) – this will determine the type of storage needed e.g. freezer for perishable foods.
