(a) The use of allusions – the “Indian Ganges”; and the “tide of    Humber” showing that distance will not be a barrier to the actualisation of their love.
(b) The use of metaphor i.e “My vegetable love” which “should grow vaster than empires”
(c) The use of hyperbolical reference, to the number of years it will take him to adore the various parts of his mistress’ body.
(d) Time like the “chariot” is flying since all will be lost through death, the love for his mistress is bound by time.
(e) Towards the end of the poem, images such as “fire”, “birds of prey” and “rough strife” are used by the poet.
Most of the candidates that attempted this question only mentioned the images and never discussed them.
