Question 5
LORRAINE HANSBERRY: A Raisin in the Sun
Examine the Youngers as a close-knit family
Observation
A good number of candidates attempted this question but their responses showed they did not understand the meaning of ‘close-knit’. They just gave mere narrations of the Younger family without relating them as a close-knit family.
Candidates' response should include:
• The Younger’s background and setting.
• Mama as the pillar/anchor/fulcrum on/around which the family rests/revolve.
• Their togetherness in spite of their individual differences and aspirations.
• The family’s ability to resist the racist offer to keep them out of Clybourne Park.
Candidates' performance in this question was fair.
