Question 14
- Define a mine.
- Highlight five major support services in mining.
- Outline four safety considerations in the construction and use of mine toilet facility.
This question was not popular among the candidates and most of those who attempted it performed poorly. Some of the candidates could not properly define the mine as an excavation in the earth’s crust from which economic minerals are extracted for a profit.
Furthermore, some of the candidates could not highlight major support services in mining.
The expected answers included:
- health services
- education services
- housing services/accommodation services
- transport services
- haulage services
- mine lighting services or illumination
- mine ventilation services
- mine sanitation services
- mine security services
- communication services
- hoisting services
- recreation services
Safety considerations in the construction and use of mine toilet facilities include:
- The toilet should be at least 20 meters away from source of drinking water
- The toilet should be constructed at least 20 metres from housing facilities.
- The toilet facility should be in an enclosure
- The toilet bowl should always be kept neat
- As much as possible, the use of pit latrine should be discouraged
- The use of water closet with septic tank is preferred
