The performance was generally poor for this compulsory question.  The expected answers were:

• sealing of burning areas
• wetting in advance of mining
• proper training of workers
• use of permissible explosives
• use of fire extinguishers
• proper ventilation
• regular maintenance of equipment
• ban on smoking
• good supervision
