Write notes on the following health challenges associated with the use of painting materials:
- painter’s colic;
 - dermatitis;
 - asphyxia;
 - dizziness;
 - skin irritation.
 
Observation
Most candidates did not  attempt this question. The performance of the candidates that   attempted the question was fair. Nevertheless,  candidates were expected to answer the question this way:            
            
            (a)        Painter’s colic
A  disease contracted by the absorption of lead into the body system over a long  period.                                                                                                                
(b)        Dermatitis
    A  disease caused by careless use of strong solvents to clean the body in such a  way as to remove the natural oil from the skin, leaving the skin in a  redness  condition.                                                                                                 
(c)        Asphyxia
    It is  caused by insufficient fresh air as a result of an operative applying paint  with strong irritating odour in a confined area, especially when spraying.                                                                                                                
    
    (d)       Dizziness
    It  is caused by excessive inhalation of paint fumes when a painter works in an
    environment that  is not properly ventilated. It is a sensation of whirling and a tendency of  falling.                                                                                                                                                                              
(e)        Skin  irritation
    It is  caused by the use of paint thinners/solvent for cleaning of the skin. It is the  inflammation of the skin and itching.
