(c)  (i)   State three instances when a penalty throw is awarded in a
handball game.          [3 marks]
            (ii)        Explain the term substitution as used in ball games.         [2 marks]

Observation

The questions were attempted by many candidates and their performance was good.
In part (a) (i), many candidates recognized that the diagram showed was a volleyball court.  However, in part (a) (ii) candidates could not label the part of the court correctly.  In part (b) candidates mentioned starting the game, ending a set, when there is an obstruction; they also listed infringements of the rules as instances when a referee blows the whistle during a volleyball game.  In part (b) (ii) candidates stated the penal offences in football game correctly.  In part (c)(i) candidates could not state instances when a penalty throw is awarded in a handball game.  In part (c) (ii) candidate knew that substitution meant replacing a player however, they failed to state that the player replacing must be from the bench.
The expected answers were as follows:

  • Penal Offences in football game

When these offences are committed within the penalty area of the defending team:

  • charging violently/dangerously;
  • charging from behind;
  • holding an opponent;
  • pushing an opponent;
  • jumping at an opponent;
  • ball handling except by the goalkeeper;
  • kicking/attempting to kick an opponent;
  • making contact with the opponent before touching the ball.                

  (c)(i)  Instances when a Penalty throw is awarded in a handball game:
-           a defender intentionally plays the balls to his goalkeeper who is in
his goal area and the goalkeeper touches the ball;
-           a defender enters his own goal area for the purpose of defence;
-           a goalkeeper intentionally carries/draws the ball from the court
into his own goal area;
-           an infringement by a defender that prevents a clear chance at goal;
            -           an unauthorized whistle signal at a time of clear chance of scoring;
            -           a clear chance of scoring destroyed by the interference of somebody not
authorized to be on the court.
                                               
     (ii)   Explanation on the term substitution as used in ball game

            Substitution:
            This is changing of player on the field of play with the player on the bench
            during the game.
