This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was fair.
In part (a) (i) candidates failed to express themselves that the spotter is an experienced gymnast who stand by to ensure safety of the performer. In part (b) many candidates could not state the progressive stage involved in performing astride vault in gymnastics. In part (c) most candidates could not explain clear and smash correctly as terms in badminton game. In part (c), candidates described the activities instead of the starting position of the activities. In part (d) nearly all the candidates who attempted the question could explain “gymnasium” and gymnast” but they could not explain “spotter”.
The expected answers were as follows:
(a) Spotting in gymnastics
Spotting is an act of providing support to a performer in order to ensure
safety in the performance of a gymnastic activity.
- Progressive stages involved in performing astride vault in gymnastics:
- performer takes a stance facing the apparatus;
- performer approaches the apparatus with a run;
- on getting to the buck/named performer take-off powerfully from both feet;
- performer places both hands momentarily on the buck;
- and splits legs side ways;
- performer lands on both feet at the opposite side of the buck.
- Description of starting position of:
- performer in squatting position
- arms stretch forward/hands placed on the mat
- standing astride
- arms stretched sideways
(iii) Astride Vault
- short run
- double take off
- Explanation on the following terms in gymnastics
A sports hall/hall where gymnastics activities are performed/explained
