Observation
This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor. In part (a) (i) and (ii) candidates could not correctly define bye in a tournament they wrote wrong answers such as the best player in a tournament, the team/player that is adjudged the best and a group of player who commit one offence or the other in (a) (ii) the candidates also wrote wrong answers such as it saves time, it is easy, it requires less facilities and equipment and it makes competitors put in their best as disadvantages of a knockout competition.
In part (b) many candidates also missed the track by writing state colleges competition, colleges competition, UEFA and FIFA as examples of extramural competition.
The expected answers are as follows:
8.(a) (i) BYE IN A TOURNAMENT
- is an arrangement in which a team/player is exempted from participating
- in the first round of a competition,
- only to join in the second/later stages
(ii) DISADVANTAGES OF A KNOCKOUT COMPETITION
- it does not allow for maximum participation
- it does not make provision for mistakes to be corrected
- best teams can be eliminated at the early stage of the competition
- the winner might not be the best
- it may not allow teams players to determine their abilities
- second chance is not allowed/permitted
- does not provide for spectators’ satisfaction
- does not give room for officials to gather more experience
