Visual Art Paper 2 (Essay) WASSCE (SC), 2017

Question 8

  1. State five differences between ancient Egyptian art and classical Greek art.

Observation

The candidates that attempted this question faired poorly.  Instead of differentiating between ancient Egyptian art and that of classical Greek art they started narrating stories of both art. They were expected to answer in the following way:

(a)        -           In ancient Egypt, nudity was used only in statues of children and servants,
while, the Classical Greek art explored male and female nudity.

  •       Ancient Egyptian statues were rigid in poses, whereas Classical Greek

statues had movement and flexibility.

  •       Ancient Egyptian art was more oriental towards religion, while the

Classical Greek art was more concerned with philosophy.

  •       The ancient Egyptian art followed strict canons, while the Classical Greek

art allowed freedom of expression.

  •       Ancient Egyptian figures have large heads with no expression, while

      Classical Greek statues exhibit emotions.

  •       Ancient Egyptian art works were centred on Pharaohs and gods, whereas

the Classical Greek art works were more individualistic.

  •       The ancient Egyptians were involved in creating monumental structures

e.g. pyramid, while the Classical Greeks were involved in creating smaller
structures e.g. Temples.

  •       The ancient Egyptians used stones mainly for their ornamental structures

e.g. pyramid, while the Greeks used marbles in their architecture e.g. Temples.
