Weakness and Remedies

 

Candidates were unable to:

  • explain the factors that influence feed formulation in farm animals
  • describe the process of preparing palm kernel cake
  • differentiate between broiler starter and broiler finisher marsh
  • explain the factors hindering livestock production in West Africa
  • describe the process of digestion of cassava tuber in the mouth of a pig
  • explain drenching and dipping as used in livestock production
  • differentiate between the digestive system of a goat and a chicken
  • explain rumination and coprophagy.
  • explain the reason for creep feeding, steaming-up and flushing of fam animals
  • define pasteurization and importance of pasteurization of milk
  • explain the importance of starving an animal before slaughtering

Consequent on the identified weaknesses observable in the candidates’ scripts, the Chief Examiners made the following recommendations:

  • Only competent graduates of Animal Science/Production should be saddled with the responsibility of teaching the subject in Senior Secondary Schools;
  • Animal Husbandry should be taught as a practical oriented subject through laboratory activities, field trips, excursions etc  and
Adequate facilities and textbooks on Animal Husbandry should be made available to enhance the teaching-learning of Animal Husbandry in Senior Secondary Schools.
