  1.             What is agricultural marketing?                                                                    [2 marks]
    (b)        State three benefits of each of the following marketing services:
                (i)         grading;
    (ii)        processing;
    (iii)       packaging.                                                                                           [9 marks]
    (c)        List two factors which influence the use of land for agricultural purposes. [2 marks]

    (d)        State three disadvantages of using mass media as an agricultural extension         teaching method.                                                                                            [3 marks]

OBSERVATION

This question was fairly attempted by the candidates. In 10(a), most of the candidates were able to explain what is meant by agricultural marketing but in 10 (b)(i-iii), majority of them could not state three benefits of each of grading, processing and packaging.  However, majority of the candidates were able to list two factors which influence the use of land for agricultural purposes and state three disadvantages of mass media as agricultural extension teaching method as required in 10(c-d).

The expected answers include:

10.(b)    Benefits of Marketing Services

  • Grading
  • Helps to maintain the quality of produce to be manufactured from agricultural raw materials
  • Promotes international trade when meeting quality expectations of foreign consumers is paramount
    • Makes it possible for buyers to place orders for produce without inspection but with confidence as to their quality
    • Facilitates the pricing process and sale of produce.

                                                                               
           (ii)                Processing

    • Converts the raw forms of most farm produce into readily consumable forms
    • Drastically reduces the physical spoilage of farm produce
    • Enhances the storage of produce
    • Reduces bulk and thereby facilitates the handling and transportation of produce.
    • Adds value to produce.

 

 (iii)         Packaging

    • Facilitates produce handling and selling
    • Protects the produce from damage during transportation
    • Makes produce compact and reduces the space it occupies in storage and transportation
    • Makes produce attractive and helps to advertise it
    • Enhances produce identification, selection and use by consumers
    • Adds value to produce
    • Helps in packaging of products.
