  1. State in sequence, five stages involved in the manufacture of clay bricks after

weathering of the materials.

  1. Sketch each of the following types of bricks:
  2. pressed brick;
  3. wire-cut brick.

 

  1. State one use of each of the following bricks:
  2. common brick;
  3. facing brick.

Few candidates were able to state:

-           the stages involved in the manufacture of clay bricks correctly;
-           the use of the given types of bricks.

However, they were unable to sketch the given types of bricks.

The expected response to question 2 is as given below:

(a)       Stages involved in the manufacture of clay bricks after weathering

(i)         Moulding (manual or machine method)
(ii)        Drying
(iii)       Burning
(iv)       Transporting
(v)        Stacking.

-           Common bricks – They are used to construct non-load bearing walls.
                                                -           They are used for internal work or any work which is to
 be covered.
                                                -           They are used where appearance is of secondary
                                                            importance.

                                    (ii)        Facing bricks

                                                -           They are used for facing buildings.
                                                -           They are used to provide a durable and pleasing finish
                                                            or aesthetic effects in building.
                                                -           They are used to construct load bearing and non-load

                                                            bearing walls
