Question 4

(a)Explain each of the following terms in relation to concrete works:
           (i)batching;
           (ii)placing;
           (iii)curing.

(b)Sketch a section through a timber formwork for a concrete floor slab and
label the following parts:

  1. (i)prop;
  2. (ii)batten.

(c) List three parts of a panel door.

 

Observation

Most candidates were able to list three parts of a panel door. 

However, few of them were unable to:

-           explain batching, placing and curing;
-           sketch a section through a timber formwork for a concrete floor slab.

The expected response to question 4 is as given below:

(a) (i)   Batching: This is a process of measuring out the required quantities of
concrete materials or ingredients (i.e. Cement, sand and stones)  This can be    done either by volume batching or weigh batching.

(ii) Placing :   This is a process of pouring out the fresh concrete in its final position 
within half to one hour after mixing. Fresh concrete should not be allowed to fall    freely more  than 1.0 metre high to prevent segregation of bigger particles of stones.

(iii) Curing:  This is a process of preventing fresh concrete from rapid drying by keeping it in damp condition.  This is done by covering it with sand, straw, plastic, glass wool etc at least for seven days.                                                                           

 

(b)   Any three factors that affect the cost of building project

  1. the size of the project;
  2. the duration of the project;
  3. inflation;
  4. government policy;
  5. availability of materials;
  6. availability of labour;
  7. location of the project;
  8. unforeseen circumstance. e. g. earthquake;
  9. poor workmanship;
  10. site pilfering/theft;
