Observation
Some of the candidates were able to:
- State four safety precautions that should be taken in a carpentry and joinery workshop.;
- List four safety operations that are carried out on a circular saw.
However, majority of them were unable to sketch a marking gauge correctly.
The expected response to question 6 is as given below:
(a) Safety precautions that should be taken in a carpentry and joinery workshop:
- allow the machine to attain its maximum speed before feeding;
- make sure the machine has come to a complete stop before leaving the machine;
- make sure the bridge guard is properly fixed;
- make sure the fence is properly secured;
- the depth adjustment knob should be properly locked;
- use a tail-off person when planing long pieces;
- do not let your hand pass over the cutter;
- put off the machine before making any adjustment;
- proper safety clothing should be worn;
- do not litter waste pieces on the floor.
(b) Operations that are carried out on a circular saw are:
- ripping;
- bevelling;
- cross-cutting;
- mitring;
- grooving;
- tenoning;
- rebating;
- chamfering.
