Observation
Most of the candidates were able to:
- Explain each of the following timber finishing materials:
(i) french polish;
(ii) retarder.
- State four sources through which a carpenter could raise fund to open a
door making business.
However, few of them were unable to:
- Explain the term surface preparation as used in finishing of timber;
- make a pictorial sketch of a brush used in painting.

8(a) Explanation ofeach of the following timber finishing materials:
(i) French Polish: It is a spirit varnish made by dissolving shellacin methylated spirit. It is used for coating wood surfaces by using a polishing rubber (rag and cotton).
(ii) Retarder: is a solvent added to a finishing material (lacquer) to slow down the drying rate
(b)
(i) Surface Preparation: is a process of smoothing the surface of timber by
using either smoothing plane, scraper and abrasive materials before the application of wood finishes.
(ii) Pictorial sketch of a brush
(c) Sources through which a carpenter could raise fund to open a door business are:
- personal savings;
- loan from friend or family members;
- soft loans from government agencies;
- loan from banks;
- sale of properties or personal shares;
- grant from donor agencies
