IN WHAT FIVE WAYS THE EXECUTIVE ARM OF GOVERNMENT CONTRIBUTES TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT?

Observation

 

This question was unpopular. Majority of the candidates who attempted performed below average. They were unable to effectively state out the functions of executive arm of government and its relevance to the development of the nation at large. Below are some points expected from the candidates.;

WAYS THE EXECUTIVE ARM OF GOVERNMENT CONTRIBUTES TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  1. Implementation of government policies – one of the major functions of the executive as an arm of government is to execute or carry out government decisions and policies.
  2. Appointment of government functionaries – the executive appoints ministers, chairmen of parastatals, heads of government corporations and agencies.
  3. Preparation of budgets for the nation – the executive prepares the nation’s budget yearly through the ministry of finance and national planning.
  4. Assents to bills – for any bill to become a law, it must be signed by the president having passed through normal legislative procedures.
  5. Maintenance of law and order – an important function of the executive is to ensure that laws are obeyed. e.g declaration of state of emergency etc..
  6. It makes laws through delegated legislation – to ease legislative burden, the legislature gives some powers to the executive to make some laws.
  7. Protection of the country against external aggression – the executive through the military ensures that the Nigeria territory is protected and not threatened by any external forces.
  8. Provision of social and economic infrastructure. e.g schools, hospitals, roads etc.
  9. Maintenance of international relations e.g. signing of treaties, pacts, conventions etc.
  10. Attracting financial aids from other countries.
  11. It carries out general administration of the country.
  12. Raising funds for national development e.g. Taxation.
  13. It exercises prerogative of mercy/grants, state pardon/amnesty which promotes national integration.
