Observation

This was a popular question among the candidates.  Majority of those who answered the  question drew poor sketch maps of Africa and poorly represented the given latitude, longitudes and areas.  The ways that the Tropical Continental Climate affects the vegetation of the area    was also poorly handled by the candidates who answered the question.  The expected answers include:

-           seasonality of rainfall leads to the growth of deciduous trees;
-           low rainfall gives rise to the development of grasslands and scattered trees;
-           trees characterized by tap roots to access water deep down the earth at dry season;
-           plants have thick bark to conserve water during dry season;
-           the length of the rainy season determines the luxuriance of the vegetation;
-           some roots of grasses remain dormant at dry season but sprouts out when rain comes;
-           Some trees are umbrella-shaped to reduce excess evaporation;
-           height of trees and grasses decreases as rainfall amount reduces;

-           trees have small leaves to reduce excessive evapo-transpiration.
