Question 4

 

  1.  Draw a sketch map of Nigeria.  On the map, locate and name:
    1. one area for the cultivation of cocoa;
    2. one area for the cultivation of rice using irrigation;
    3. one area for rearing of livestock;   
    4. one town in each of the areas in 4 (a) (i), (ii) and (iii).

     

  2. Outline five problems affecting the livestock industry in Nigeria.

Observation

 

This question was not popular among the candidates because of map work.  Most of the candidates who answered the question performed poorly in the map work as they drew poor map outlines and some of them located the required features at wrong places.
The problems affecting the livestock industry include:
-           unreliable and scanty rainfall
-           pests e.g. tsetse fly, tick etc.
-           diseases e.g. rinder pest, foot rot, mouth and skin diseases, trypanosomiasis etc
-           poor management techniques
-           inadequate modern ranches
-           poor breed
-           inadequate grazing lands
-           poor quality pasture
-           over grazing
-           poor transportation facilities
-           competition from imported products
-           inadequate storage facilities
-           inadequate capital/funding
-           high interest rates
-           limited government support
-           inadequate veterinary services/extension officers
-           high cost of products – drugs, vaccine etc.
-           cultural influences – nomadic nature of rearing and measure of wealth
-           inadequate research and innovations
-           conflicts between cattle rearers and farmers
-           cattle rustling
-           insufficient surface water during the dry season
