Geography Paper 2 WASSCE (SC), 2019

Question 2

The table 1 below shows the population distribution and land area of five states of a country B in the year 2010. Use the data to answer the following question.

Table 1

(a) Calculate the:
(i) total population;

(ii) total land area;

(iii) population density of country B.

(b) Explain four factors that influence the distribution of world human population.
(c) Outline three factors that cause increase in world human population.

Observation

This question was quite popular among the candidates and most of those who answered the question just got average marks. Many of the candidates could not state the formula and approximate at the end of their calculation to get units per square km in the (a) part of the question and only few candidates were able to explain the factors that could cause increase in world population. The expected answers include:

(a)
(i) Calculation of total population (MILLION)
3.2+5.4+7.4+6.5+4.2=26.7/26,700,000=2 marks

(ii) Calculation of total land area
140,000+98000+35000+120000+86000=479,000km²=2 marks

(iii) Calculation of population density of country B
Total population /Area in KM
26,700.000/478,000=55.858 =56 persons per km²=2marks

(b)Factors that influence the distribution of world human population
-relief

-climate

-soil

-job opportunities

-presence of energy

-accessibility

-mineral deposit

-sources of water supply

-industrialization

-sources of food

-conflict

-health conditions

-political conditions

-government policy

Any 4 points well explained at 2 marks each=8 marks
Mere listing =1 mark each

(c)Factors that cause increase in world human population

-improved medical facilities

-improved hygiene and sanitation

-adequate food supply

-improved standard of living

-decrease in death rate

-increase in birth rates

-significance attached to number of children by some cultures

-preference for male or female children by some cultures

-religious belief

-early marriages
