Observation

This was a compulsory question attempted by virtually all candidates and their performance in the question was above average. Many candidates could not state the scale of the enlarge map in Representative Fraction in the (a) part of the question and only few could identify the functions of the settlement and characteristics of River Ankobra using evidence.
Candidates were expected to answer thus:

(c) (i) Functions of HEMAN Settlement
- educational function as evidenced by the presence of schools
- religious functions as evidenced by the presence of churches
- commercial function as evidenced by the presence market
- transportation function as evidenced by the presence of secondary roads
- fishing as evidenced by the presence of a lake

(ii) Characteristics of River Ankobra
- is the major river draining the mapped area
- flows from north to south
- has many tributaries e.g. R. Huni, R. Sunwini, R. Boawobi, etc
- has ox-bow lakes and/or ponds on its course
- presence of meanders
- between 10ft and 100ft wide
- maintains straight and curved courses according to topography of land
- valley is wider in the north and narrow in the south
- drains mostly the eastern part of the map
- flows through the passes/gaps in the ridge
- drainage pattern is dendritic
- flows through relatively low lands avoiding highlands
