question 1

(a)       What is legitimacy in government?

(b)      Outline any five ways of acquiring legitimacy

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Observation

This was a popular and straightforward question and majority of the candidates attempted it.  Many candidates scored high marks in the question as they were able to define legitimacy as” the recognition and acceptance of the rulers by the people as expressed in compliance to the authority”.

However, some weak candidates failed to score good marks in this question because their definitions lacked the major key words in the correct definition such as recognition, acceptance and compliance.

On the whole, candidates’ overall performance in the question was above average.

The very good candidates did not fail to outline some of the following ways of acquiring legitimacy:

  • acceptable ideology of the government i.e. socialist, capitalist;
  • charisma of the leaders;
  •  method of changing government;
  • performance of government;
  • observance of Rule of Law, etc.
